The cause gives opportunities for people of all abilities, including those with profound disabilities, to get on the water.
Ted Hill MBE, Chair of Wetwheels Hamble, said:
“We are honoured to be named the Charity of the Year for such a renowned and iconic event as the Round the Island Race.
“This opportunity allows us to showcase the transformative power of accessible boating while connecting with the vibrant sailing community.
“We encourage participants to take the helm, removing both actual and perceived barriers to help gain independence, learn new skills and let the sensory experiences the water offers broaden horizons.
“Together, we can create more unforgettable moments on the water for those who might otherwise never have the chance."
Using a specially adapted boat, Wetwheels Hamble enables wheelchair users and individuals with varying physical and cognitive needs to immerse themselves in seafaring adventures.
Trips are run across The Solent area, promoting sensory experiences families can share together.
Dave Atkinson, Round the Island Race Director, said:
“Wetwheels Hamble is a brilliant charity with a great purpose and they are the perfect cause for the Round the Island Race to support.
“We hope to raise lots of money and awareness of their work so they can continue offering such valuable experiences on the water.”
