Brazilian big wave surfers Lucas 'Chumbo' Chianca and Pedro 'Scooby' Vianna took centre stage at the TUDOR Nazaré Big Wave Challenge, conquering 9-to-12-meter waves and dominating the shores of Praia do Norte in Nazaré, on the west coast of central Portugal. Here is all you need to know:
- Despite a temporary hold in the morning due to slow sets, the action kicked off just after noon, drawing massive crowds on the headland and around the iconic lighthouse to witness the world's best big wave surfers showcasing their prowess.
- Defending champion Lucas 'Chumbo' Chianca, a five-time winner in Nazaré, stood out with an exceptional display throughout the day, securing the Men's Best Performance Award for the second consecutive year.
- Despite a last-minute partner change, prompted by Kai Lenny's injury-induced withdrawal, Chianca teamed up with compatriot Pedro 'Scooby' Vianna. Their synergy was evident as they identified the prime waves in the dynamic lineup, ultimately earning the Brazilian duo the top spot in the Team's Best Performance Award.
- Speaking about their victory, Chianca said: "This is a dream for me, I never expected to win so many times here. This place is magical, Nazaré has given me everything in my life. This win is probably the most special to me because we were a 100% Brazilian team. It was such a pleasure to tow with 'Scooby,' one of the guys who pushed me, helped me and inspired me when I started surfing big waves. I’m really happy to give him back a little bit with our performance today."
- Vianna, still recovering from illness just days before the event, added: "I can’t believe two days ago I was super sick on my couch in Rio De Janeiro. Lucas encouraged me and I decided to come. I put all my energy into this and our team worked really well to take the win."
- He continued: "Lucas is so talented, we’ve been surfing since his first big swells and we talk a lot about everything and we have a great connection so to win with him today is super special."
